Letter from Prof Grozdinski

After hearing about a new doctor working on patients in Bulgaria I decided to contact him to find out what his team offers.  The following is his response, his email is: grozdinski (at) mail.bg

Information for Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Patients

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a progressive inflammation disease of the central nervous system in which the myelin sheaths around the axons of the brain are damaged and the transmission of nerve signals is blocked, which leads to the occurrence of paralysis and loss of vision. Until recently MS was considered a disease of the autoimmune system with a possible virus genesis, which has hereditary predisposition. But the basic cause of the disease remained undetermined which brought for serious problems in its treatment and prophylaxis.

In 2008 – 2009 the Italian Dr. Paolo Zamboni made public a theory according to which MS is caused by chronic cerebrospinal venous insufficiency (CCVI). He established that about 90% of the MS patients have a severe blockage of the venous draining of the brain, leading to damage of the venous endothelium, followed by invasion and buiding-up of toxic substances (iron) in the brain tissue, which is the cause of chronic inflammation of the sheathing around the brain nerves. Dr. Zamboni developed his research further. For a group of 65 MS patients he used an inflated small balloon to clear out the blockage of the brain draining veins, which brought for a considerable improvement in the status of most patients. As a follow-up now several centers in Europe have started venous diagnostics and treatment of MS patients.

The first examinations which took part in Bulgaria in two specialized hospitals through a color echo doppler and computer tomography – phlebography – confirmed the presence of venous pathology in MS patients. We worked out a scheme for the examination of MS patients, including 3 basic procedures:  testing with a color echo doppler (a non-invasive examination), computer tomograph phlebography (a non-invasive examination) and phlebography with balloon dilatation, or a metal stent to hold the vein open permanently. This treatment can take place in a Bulgarian specialized hospital with the patent being hospitalized for 3 to 5 days. In actual fact this treatment is harmless and complications are not to be expected. The presumption of this treatment is that by eliminating the cause of MS – the cerebrospinal venous insufficiency – improvement will take place and the progressive development of the disease will be stopped. This treatment should be undertaken alongside with anti-inflammation therapy, conducted by neurologists, as for the time being the role of the venous disturbance in the etiopathogenesis of MS is not clear – it may be either a basic cause, a triggering mechanism or a concomitant process. The possibilities of contemporary phlebology (the veins science) in Bulgaria and elsewhere for diagnosing and effective treatment of venous pathology in patients with MS are with a big potential and we hope to be able to help thousands of patients who suffer from this debilitating disease.

We created a working group of phlebologists – specialists in venous and ultrasound diagnostics, specialists in computer-tomograhy diagnostics and endovascular therapy, to conduct the venous diagnostics of MS patients and in cases of pathology findings to provide the necessary treatment: dilatation of the blocked veins.

Foreign citizens, who want to be diagnosed and treated for multiple sclerosis at a Bulgarian center should apply for it by e-mail and as a reply will get additional offer of tentative costs of the procedures to be diagnosed and treated, and afterwards will be provided with dates for the hospital treatment.

Requirements for the diagnostics and treatment of patients with CCSVI, which can be performed in Sofia, Bulgaria at a Bulgarian hospital, specializing in the field of cardio-vascular diseases, are as follows:

  1. Patient should be diagnosed with MS through magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
  2. He or she should have his MS epicrisis translated into English.
  3. Conclusions by a consulting neurologist should give the objective status of the present condition of the patient.
  4. Patient should have a health insurance.
  5. Upon hospitalization patient should give in writing his/her agreement to undergo the needed procedures for diagnostics and treatment.

Hospitalization of foreign citizens at the center for diagnostics and treatment of patients with CCSVI will start in April 2010. It will include the following procedures:

  1. Echo-doppler of the venous system.
  2. Computer tomography (СТ) – phebography of the veins.
  3. Phlebography of vena cava, vena jugularis and vena azygos.
  4. If at the time of phlebography vein stenosis has been diagnosed, momentous balloon dilatation or stent implementation will be performed.
  5. Parallel to these examinations the patient will undergo comprehensive blood tests, electrocadiography and consultations with a phlebologist, cardiologist and neurologist.
  6. Duration of hospital treatment will be 3 days.
  7. Upon release from the hospital patients will be provided with epicrisis with the confirmed diagnosis and description of the implemented treatment.

Instructions for further treatment and date of the following checkup will also be provided.

The total cost of the hospital treatment and the performing of all procedures for diagnostics and treatment will be 3,000 euro.

In cases when no venous pathology has been found and no balloon dilatation has been performed cost will be 2,000 euro.

If you are interested in undergoing treatment in Sofia in agreement with the above mentioned requirements please e-mail to me your request, including your names and address, so that we can provide you with the date for hospitalization and additional detailed information.

Prof. Grozdinski

Chairman of the Bulgarian National Phlebology Society

hello, I am in Connecticut, USA. Does anyone have an idea how long its taken to get a reply from the doctor, we emailed him a few weeks ago? My partner is waiting for a reply and we have many of the same questions as Ariane from the May 12th post on this same website.
  • Emanuele
hi, my name is Emanuele, I write from Italy.
I have booked the treatment with the dott Grozdinski for the 9-09-2010; does someone of you have performed yet the treatment with him?
  • Janice
My partner has secondary progressive MS and we are scheduled for the treatment September 1st. Definitely, Tokuda Hospital in Sofia, Bulgaria is beautiful and our GP thinks that we will get great care. The cost keeps rising, but if it can reduce symptoms of MS then it really is worth it. The procedure is 5,000 euro, the stents are 650 euro per stent. If my daughter and I choose to stay in the hospital, it is 20.45 euro per person, per day. Meals are 15 euro per person, per day. Bulgaria is a beautiful country!

For those who are looking for some answers of the operation getting done in Bulgaria, you can go on this site where people have already gotten treatment and they speak about there experiences : http://www.thisisms.com/ftopict-9625-india.html

I am so happy to have found this site. My husband has RR MS. He has been diagnosed for 12 years. He was taking copaxone since diagnosis but it was no longer working. 6 months ago he switched to Tysabri... it is helping slightly. I worry so much about the horrific side affects! I am going to try to get in touch with this Doctor. With 2 young children and a busy life, we (and anyone affeceted by MS) does not have the time to sit on our hands for years and years while the governement reviews and studies!
  • Ariane
I have a progressive form of MS, diagnosed in 1996. Grozdinski's treatment is great hope for me. But in my various searches I was given false hopes many times. Before I take the decision, I need to talk to some patients who had this treatment, and get an update of their condition.
I need to kow how they were before, and after... and after after.
Is it possible to get in touch with these patients?
  • Laurie Marple
I just got connected to this sight,am hoping to get on the list for the Liberation Treatment as well. Good luck & God Bless us all. It's rather sad that Canadians have to go to another country for Health care when they could be so easily treated, right here at home.
  • Peter,

No this treatment is not available in Canada yet. It will likely be several years before there have been enough tests conducted to satisfy the health care system.

That being said in the next year or so there will likely be studies open to Canadians but where and when (or even if) I don't know.

Just heard on the radio today that Saskatchewan will be starting clinical trials in September

    I'm wondering the same...

Karla: You said you were scheduled for April? Did you end up getting the treatment?

    Thanks!

The treatment on Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
I am writing you in hope that you are still taking applications for the operation.

Last January 2009 was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, have been on “Copaxone”, 20gm a day.
I know it has been just over a year but, have not seen an improvement, if any thing, I see this affliction getting worse and would like to inquire about the operation you offer.

I’m not waiting for the government here to start allowing this procedure to be performed within Canada as I feel I will be in a wheel chair long before they decide to move on this.

I would need the cost and requirements that have to be met to insure that I get on the waiting list.

    I need this
  • Peter L Brown
Is this treatment going to be available in Canada in the foreseeable future?
If so, has there been any talk on the coast of this operation when (and if) it becomes available in Canada? Is there a list that I have to get on?
  • Colleen Siebert
I just got my email back from Dr. Grozdinski, it was rejected by his computer. so does that mean he`s not taking more appointments or what. now what do I do!

    Jesse,
Thank you!!! I will definitely let you know about my experience in Bulgaria!!!! It is such a simple procedure and you don't need much recovery time. I am doing what I have to do to get well and I hope others do as well. I would rather a doctor in another country perform this procedure as they are more ahead of the times than they are here in Canada and have much more experience. : ))
  • Karla
I contacted Dr. Grozdinski Thursday before last and he contacted me the next day and told me that I was on the waiting list for April 2010 at the Tokuda hospital in Sophia, Bulgaria. I am very confident that things will go well. I have no worries. April is very soon and I am very excited.

  • Jesse
    Karla,

Congrats, I hope everything turns out well for you!

Keep us advised on what your experience with his team is like. I know many people are dubious about doctors in countries with which they are unfamiliar.
  • Shannon Wilde
Hello. Does this doctor and his team perform MRV's as part of the testing for CCSVI
  • Jesse
    Shannon,
All of the information that I have about this team's procedures are in this letter. From as best I can see they only do a doppler and a CT scan.
  • Jesse
    Victor,

Unfortunately you would need to contact Prof Grozidinski, this website is not affiliated with any medical provider. The only thing we do here is provide information.
  • Unknown
He has already changed the pricing. 3000 baloon, 5000 stenting.
  • Jesse
    John,
Procedure cost 3000 euro if they find CCSVI, and 2000 euro if they don't but still do the testing.

    Anne,
His email is: grozdinski (at) mail.bg

    Maria,
At the moment I do not know much more about this person nor his facility. However, as stated in the letter his team will start taking patients in April.
  • Anne Ste. Marie
It doesn't list his email address. Do you have it?
  • john hamill
How much does the procedure cost, and i would like to know of patients u have treated....so i can possibly speak with them.
